1 SYNOPSIS This chapter sets out the professional and policy reasons for the inclusion of clinical supervision on the national nursing agenda. The impact that clinical supervision offers the individual practitioner in supporting professional aims, and its role in meeting high standards of care is highlighted. What clinical supervision is, and what it is not is discussed and working definitions are given. The text highlights that clinical supervision is about empowerment of the individual, and stresses the need for professional development. The importance of clinical supervision within the context of clinical governance is explained, and the ethical tensions are discussed.
